Lately, I have been pontificating about how to handle, steer, paddle and fish from a canoe. But an incident last week reminded me that I have been remiss in the discussion of how best to exit a canoe.
The incident I speak of was a textbook example of how to dismount from a canoe, taught so ably by my brother Martin.
Luckily, I was in the stern of the canoe and was therefore able to take notes and study the nuances of the manoeuvre he so expertly executed.
We had just finished an eight-hour stint of fly fishing from said canoe when we decided that it was time to return to the landing. I only mention that, so you know that our legs were basically devoid of blood flow and feeling – two things absolutely required for a classic canoe dismount.
