When homeowners consider installing rooftop solar panels, they often face another question: Should I add a battery?

Batteries offer meaningful advantages, but with price tags typically between $10,000 and $20,000, they are far from a minor addon. The decision ultimately depends on a homeowner’s priorities, energy needs and budget.

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, usually peaking around midday when many people are away from home. Without a battery, excess electricity is sent to the provincial grid through Ontario’s net metering program. In return, homeowners receive credits they can use in the same calendar year when their panels produce less power.
