We put a lot of faith in food processors’ trustworthiness. And when it comes to the sanctity of imported honey, it appears we’re being misled.
Last week the Canadian Beekeepers Federation, representing commercial honey producers across the country, issued a stinging statement against the federal government.
It accuses Ottawa of not protecting consumers from fake honey imports. This stuff arrives in Canada in drums. From there, it gets added to sauces, to condiments like honey mustard and to sweeten baked goods. Consumers rarely, if ever, see the original goopy product. And even if they did, from its outward appearance they might not be able to pick it out from the real thing.
