The monthly meeting of the Historical Society of St. Boniface and Maryhill Community was held on Monday, August 26th in the Edward Halter Home at 7 p.m.
Committee Reports:
ARCHIVIST & GENEALOGY – During the months of July and August research was done for Sam & Hilara Albertico (Bruder / Schlosser) Larry Stephens (Schmitt) Amanda Knight (Keleher & McKainney-Drexler cross),Antoine Merkel (Baechler), Steph Scott (Olinski), Don & Kim Kivell (Hummel), Dawn Hummel (Hummel), Lauren Huston (Hummel / Weiler), Jen McCann (Fach), Paul Knight / Marlene Waechter (Waechter).
We now have a hard copy of the Soufflenheim Civil Birth Index 1792-1862 at Halter House.
BIRTHDAY CLUB – During the months of July and August 15 cards were sent each month.
CHURCH – We had 5 deaths and 4 baptisms during the summer months. The New and Old Cemetery books have been updated and ready to be published.
COMMUNITY– Publications sold during the summer. Worked on Veterans Book – this will be ongoing. Have completed list of Veterans Grave Sites and will be putting flags on the graves on the 9th of Nov. until after Remembrance Day. Continued to work on names on pictures of “Blue Moon” gang.
FUNDRAISING – Items for Silent Auction are coming in steadily as are the raffle tickets. Door prizes are also being collected. All donors will be recognized on the website, newsletter and a poster at Heritage Day. This poster will also be kept at the Historical House.
MEMBERSHIP – We have a total of 298 member households with 165 receiving their information via email. Five members have passed away.
PROGRAM – Heritage Day plans are going smoothly. Discussion was on the preparation of Heritage Day on Sunday, Sept. 22nd at the Maryhill Heritage Park Community Centre. The program begins at 10 a.m. with Mass. Gathering will take place after at the Grotto on the Rectory Lawn at 10:40 a.m. 10:45 the car cavalcade will visit the place where the first mass was said and then on to the 3 Wayside Crosses. The Maryhill Heritage Park Community Centre will also be open at 10:45 for those not wishing to go on the tour. Cost for the meal is $20 for adults, $10 for 6-12 years and 5 years old are free. Meal is scalloped potatoes, ham and all the trimmings, dessert and refreshments. There will be presentations, silent auction, door prizes and raffle. ADVANCE TICKETS ONLY. Tickets can be purchased from any Board Member or emailing maryhillroots@gmail.com. This fundraiser in an important resource for the Maryhill Historical Society to continue to preserve Community History and acquire 21st century technology to succeed.
PUBLICATIONS – Everyone received a rough draft of the newsletter which will be going out in November before the Annual General Meeting. Plans are underway for a video to be shown at Heritage Day.
RESOURCE CENTRE – The flowerbeds have been looked after all summer as well as cleaning in the house periodically. Weekend Open Houses held every Sunday 1 – 4 p.m. and a special tour was given to several resident from Twin Oaks Nursing Home.
SCHOOL – Donating School yearbook. Have updated school staff changes for the new year.
WAYSIDE CROSSES – Work has been done around the Crosses and painting the picket fences.
WEBSITE CO-ORDINATOR – Has been busy updating everything. We have just recently received the Soufflenheim Civil Birth Index 1792-1862. Thanks to Robert Wideen of New York City. This information is searchable and is a wealth of other information related to Soufflenheim. The graphics are exquisite. We also now have a facebook page – Maryhill Roots. This is a group for those who grew up in Maryhill, have ancestors from the Maryhill area or anyone with an interest in the history of our community!
NEW BUSINESS – 2 ad hoc committees are being set up. One is on Financial and the other on Archives. These groups will be meeting shortly. They will be making better clarification for the Policies and Procedures document.
