Report: U.S. dairy is not up to Canadian standards

This week, if we are forced, coerced or cajoled into taking more U.S. dairy exports during frenzied, last-minute trade negotiations, we’ll be agreeing to take some products that are not up to Canadian standards.

That’s the upshot of a report from agri-food sector analyst Al Mussel, the research lead at Guelph-based Agri-Food Economic Systems. His organization released a report earlier this week comparing dairy quality standards in Canada and the U.S.

Simply put, ours is better than theirs.

An important observation from Mussel and company involves milk classification. In Canada, if milk from a dairy farm is anything less than the gold standard, it doesn’t enter the system.
