Swartzentruber, Alta Rachel (nee Nafziger)

Passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord, with family by her side, at St. Mary’s General Hospital, Kitchener on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at the age of 90 years. Beloved wife of Elroy Swartzentruber of Waterloo for almost 70 years. Loving mother of James and Linda of St. Jacobs, Sandra and Peter Fehr of Elmira, Steve (friend Donna) of Simcoe, Charles and Susan of Stratford, PEI, Cameron and Janet of Kitchener. Cherished grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Sister of Irma Swartzentruber of New Hamburg and Marie Nafziger of Waterloo, and sister-in-law of Harold and Delores Swartzentruber of New Hamburg. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son John (1999), parents Rudy and Elizabeth Nafziger, sister Edith Jutzi, sister-in-law Grace Schwartzentruber, and brothers-in-law Amos Jutzi, Raymond Schwartzentruber and Nelson Swartzentruber. Alta was born in Brunner, Ontario. She was the love of Elroy’s life and together they farmed for many years in Petersburg, Ontario. She was the queen of hospitality and her door was always open to welcome family, friends and neighbours, and you could always count on her to have guests at the Sunday dinner table. She was an avid gardener and baker – everyone loved her homemade donuts, pies and pastries. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking, canning, reading and journaling. Alta and Elroy enjoyed many trips to the US to visit Florida, Lancaster, Alaska and many other states. She sacrificially cared for their son John throughout his life. She loved the Lord and set a godly example to ladies around her, especially the younger women. She shared many words of wisdom on marriage, parenting and cooking. She will be sadly missed by those she formed friendships with throughout the years. Special thanks to the staff at Beechwood Manor for the love and care shown to Alta these last few months. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025 at Trinity Bible Chapel, 1373 Lobsinger Line, Waterloo, with a time of visiting prior from 10-10:45 a.m. A reception will follow the service, and interment will take place in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo. As expressions of sympathy, donations to Alzheimer Society or Trinity Bible Chapel would be appreciated and may be made through the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira.
