Less than a year into his ill-fated second term, U.S. president Donald Trump has upended the postwar consensus that has maintained something resembling stability for the past 80 years.
Last weekend’s incursion into Venezuela to capture Nicolás Maduro underscored Trump’s recklessness and disregard for the law. Canadians are well advised to take heed.
Few would lament the arrest of Maduro, a dictator who’s brought misery and poverty to his country, and who clung to power despite losing an election. But an illegal assault on the country with no legal defence is not the way to uphold either democracy or the rule of law.
