If you have ever walked past the unpretentious brick building at 1 Union St. in Elmira, you may not be aware that it houses one of the most celebrated and decorated environmental consulting firms in North America.

Enviro-Stewards Inc., founded by professional engineer Bruce Taylor, has spent more than two decades helping clients – major manufacturers, food processors, and institutions – accomplish the unlikely combination of cutting waste, saving energy and reducing environmental footprint while at the same time improving financial profitability. This company’s remarkable success story deserves more attention.

At its core, that story stems from Enviro-Stewards’ relatively novel approach to tackling waste management in industry. Simply put, rather than focusing solely on a company’s end-of-pipe waste treatment issues, its engineers identify points in the production process where water, energy and raw materials are first lost. They then re-engineer those systems so that such losses don’t happen in the first place.
