Things got a little emotional during the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival’s grant-dispersal night on Monday.
For the first recognition award of the evening, Paul Smith of Provincial Waste Systems came forward and gave a short speech in which he vowed continued support.
As it turns out, he has health concerns that have led him to sell his company, which could have meant future festivals would be without a waste strategy. His voice broke momentarily as he told those gathered that he made sure to include a caveat in the sale agreement that the new owner would continue the annual tradition of supporting the festival.
