Ottawa has blown a huge opportunity to reverse a poor decision it made earlier this year to cut seven federally funded agricultural research stations across the country and 655 personnel.

Last week, federal agriculture and agri-food minister Heath MacDonald announced he was ignoring the recommendation of an all-party committee looking into the cuts which recommended they be paused and reversed.

Instead, MacDonald said, “closure of the research and development centres will be phased and carefully managed.”
