A new strain of the flu has been circulating in Waterloo Region, resulting in an increase in cases and hospitalizations.
A variant of the H3N2 influenza virus, the strain is stronger and longer-lasting, according to experts.
“It’s a different H3N2 than what we’ve seen in the past, and this specific virus was not a good match for the vaccine,” said David Aoki, Waterloo Region Public Health’s director of infectious disease and chief nursing officer.
