More than a thousand Waterloo Region elementary school students without updated vaccination records were sent home last week, following warnings from public health officials.

“We require that all elementary and secondary students have proof of vaccination for nine diseases,” associate director for infectious diseases Jessie Johal told The Observer.

The nine diseases are measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, polio, meningitis, pertussis (whooping cough) and varicella (chickenpox).
