The man had fallen into the water while attempting to rescue his dog, which had broken through a thing layer of ice while being walked without a leash, Woolwich deputy fire chief Dale Martin said. Both the man and his dog were pulled out of the water before emergency crews arrived at the scene. No serious injuries were reported.

Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times within the township, and no one should approach the bank of any river, stream or pond now that winter whether has arrived, Martin said.
