The art form known as needle felting has been around for thousands of years. Conestogo’s Tracy Willard has been practicing it for approximately eight years, creating realistic landscapes that resemble photographs.
“I’ve always sort of dabbled in art… it was more than just fun, but when I started doing this, then I felt more confident that this is the place that I belong,” said the artist, who is in her 70s, noting that she could get all the little details in the pieces.
The art form involves sculpting wool fibres using a needle on a mat, a style that’s among the oldest textile techniques, believed to have originated around 6000 BCE, according to the Rustic Fibre Academy.
