In duck hunting, just as in the old cartoons, there are times when the hunter wins, and there are times when the ducks win. I experienced the latter last Saturday in the Southern Region on opening day.
It started with us bushwhacking in darkness to a spot we have regularly hunted successfully in previous years.
That spot is on my friend’s property, and he normally clears trail to the river and the canoe we have stashed there. This year, he didn’t have the chance to do that, so we waded through heavy underbrush in the pitch black to get there for first light.
