Picking knits that have enduring appeal

I was discussing fashion trends with a friend the other day, as we outdoorsmen often do, when I mentioned that I had not seen a sweater with a duck, pheasant, pointing dog, fish or beagle knitted on it since I was a kid.

He lamented that this was his experience, too.

Those of you under 50 probably do not remember them, but there was a time when almost every hunter and angler had a sweater that had them. And, lest you think they were tacky, let me just point out that they were cardigans – with zippers. And when a man of a certain age wore one, they turned heads, though, admittedly, not always in their direction.
