The Liberal Party’s trio of byelection victories this week should be understood as something larger than a routine midterm political check in. They amount to a public endorsement of the growing perception that Mark Carney is the figure Canadians trust most to navigate an increasingly volatile global economic landscape – especially the escalating trade confrontation driven by Donald Trump.

At the same time, these results serve as a pointed rebuke of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, whose culture-war-heavy approach continues to leave a majority of Canadians unconvinced.

The Liberals strengthened their narrow majority by now holding 173 seats with wins in Toronto, Vancouver and Chicoutimi, Quebec.
