On Saturday, CUPE Local 1883 workers were prepared to strike, but instead they announced that a tentative agreement had been reached with the Region of Waterloo, with only hours left before the deadline.
This skirmish wasn’t primarily about wages, but job security, staffing levels, recent layoffs and what the union described as a shrinking frontline capacity while population levels soar.
