The Bloomingdale Women’s Institute held their first meeting of the year on Monday, September 9th at 7:30 p.m. in the Bloomingdale United Church Hall.

A reminder was made of the Area Convention to take place on Thursday, October 24th at the Listowel Agriculture Hall.  Cost is $40 for the day beginning at 9 a.m.  There will be a presentation, entertainment, and a speaker. The theme for the day is Arts through the Years.

The Federated  Women’s Institute Annual meeting is in Brantford on November 27th, 28th, and 29th.  More information will be forthcoming.

There will be no meeting in November but a trip to New Hamburg to see the play “Calendar Girls”.   “Calendar Girls” is one of the most touching,  complex and relatable shows. It is about a Women’s Institute in England who do a nude calendar to raise money for an important cause, but the friendships, friction, and situations these characters live through feel so real because we’ve all come against similar circumstances in our own lives. This show is especially challenging because of the depth and humanity these characters reveal. But don’t be fooled – this isn’t some fluffy comedy. This play is a true story of friendship and loss, of conflict and healing. The nudity doesn’t make it easy though – the real women of the WI bared all, both their physical selves and their souls.  More information on tickets will be coming at the October meeting.

Discussion also took place about the December meeting.

Roll Call – There were many various answers to the Roll Call  “What have I accomplished with a Women’s Institute life skill?”

The  program  dealt with each members talking about their family history –  “Where did your family come from and when did they arrive in Canada?”   Members ancestries were from Switzerland, Germany, England, France and  Ireland to name a few.  Time ran out for all members to related their family stories and it was decided that the December meeting will pick up the remaining members history.

Next Meeting will be on October 7th  at 7:30 p.m. at Bloomingdale United Church.  Roll call will be  “Something interesting I have grown or would like to grow?”  The program will have members forcing bulbs for winter enjoyment and will be shown how to have flowers off-season.
