The topic can no longer be avoided – artificial intelligence has now infiltrated nearly every facet of society, including the education system. Some see it as a nefarious force that enables plagiarism and cheating, while others consider it to be just the latest tool that students can utilize as part of their learning trajectory.
As Waterloo Region students prepare to head back to school, there are now widely available formalized guidelines for both the Catholic and secular streams.
Just this May, the Waterloo District School Board officially launched their GenAI Student Guidelines policy, which will give students in Grades 7 through 12 access to Google Gemini and Notebook LM. The policy states that only board-approved tools will be allowed on school accounts, and that teachers can decide whether AI can be used for assignments.
