The Headwaters Institute, a Canadian charity focused on protecting water, is calling on the government to do more to protect Ontario’s Great Lakes.
The charity last month submitted formal comments on the renewal of the Canada-Ontario Agreement on Great Lakes Water Quality and Ecosystem Health (COA), calling for the integration of land use and watershed planning in Ontario and greater public outreach. The Headwater Institute also submitted a petition with 150 signatures, along with recommendations on the renewal of the COA.
The discussion comes at a time when the federal and provincial governments are debating the renewal of the COA. The agreement came to an end on May 31 after being in effect for five years and undergoing its ninth renewal.
