Wife-and-husband team Steph and Zach Muma own Silver Creek Nursery in Wellesley, where they do things a little differently.

While most tree growers rely on chemical herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides to control pests and weeds, the Mumas run a mostly organic operation. Their focus is on preserving long-term land health to improve the strength and resilience of their trees.

Their test orchard boasts more than 500 cultivars of food-bearing plants, including apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, quince, medlars and apricots.
