The region’s longstanding policy to contain urban sprawl from encroaching on rural areas – the so-called countryside line – is one of the key arguments against a proposed industrial development on the Woolwich side of Bridge Street, opposite a similar development in Waterloo.
The sentiment remains, but the policy itself is no longer in force in the township, says the planning consultant helping to draft Woolwich’s new official plan, the overarching guide for future development and growth.
“The countryside line does not exist in the township, according to the province’s decision,” said Mary Lou Tanner of NPG Consulting.
