Based on the 2003 movie by Tim Firth and Juliette Towhidi, Calendar Girls hits the stage next month courtesy of the Elmira Theatre Company.

“It’s actually a true story,” director Kimberly Young revealed, explaining that it tells the story of a group of middle-aged women who create a daring calendar to raise money after the husband of one of the Women’s Institute members, Annie, is diagnosed with terminal leukemia.

While regularly visiting the hospital, one of the women, Chris, complains about the uncomfortable couch in the waiting room, which then gives the group a fundraising idea after seeing a nude calendar in a local mechanic’s shop.
