Six local athletes received a boost to their educational funds last week as NHLPA Dan Snyder Memorial Scholarship recipients.
Nate Gravelle, Lucas Benham, Jordyn MacDonald, Alex Veitch, Kylie Rayfield and Karsten Smith will each receive a $2,233.33 bursary towards their post-secondary education.
This marked the 22nd year of such a presentation, named in honour of the Elmira-born NHL player who died on Oct. 5, 2003 in Atlanta following a single-vehicle collision in which he was a passenger.
It was two years and six months after he made his NHL debut, having battled his way through the minors and indeed every stage of his hockey career to achieve that dream.
