Woolwich residents this week elected a new council to govern the township, a function that began in 1850. John Meyer was the first reeve, joined by four councillors.
The group’s initial meeting took place at a Conestogo tavern.
It was the early days of January 1850, and five prominent settlers in Woolwich had convened to form the first township council – pioneer John Meyer was named the reeve, while Peter Wenger, Peter Hay, Edward Pasmore and William Veitch took the remaining council seats. The community was still fresh-faced and growing, supervised by magistrates from Hamilton, but it was time for them to strike off on their own.
