To the Editor,
As someone who has cycled across Canada, continues to cycle and who has many friends who cycle, I am always interested and supportive of ways to make cycling safer for everyone.
As I read the reporting of the potential of adding cycling lanes on Elmira’s main street, I don’t see that as the best option. I fully support the alternative suggested. No cyclist cares about a “direct route” and cares most about a safe way to get through a town or city. The option of other streets, particularly Snyder Avenue that already should be a 40 km/h street, is far superior to sending cyclists down Arthur Street.
Fergus, which is on the Elora-Cataract trail, is a good example where cyclists are directed around the main street with a safe way to get back to the trail. Cycling lanes should not be for show, they should provide a safe way for cyclists to share the roads with cars and trucks when needed.
Hopefully, the region will make the right choice.
