Local municipalities feeling impact of road salt shortage

Local road salt supplies are running low as frequent heavy snowfalls drive up demand while reduced deliveries from suppliers limit replenishment.

The Region of Waterloo loaned some of its 6,500-tonne annual allocation to other municipalities so that they can keep up with de-icing requirements following winter’s early start.

Chris Cook, Wellesley’s director of public works, confirmed that his township had so far only been able to purchase around half of its 850-tonne order this season.
