170 years after Saugeen Fever rush, ancestors continue to maintain Maryhill connections

Their ancestors packed up their wagons and left Maryhill 170 years ago to seek their fortunes by taking part in the Saugeen Fever land rush.

But each year, some of those with distant roots in the storied little village return to celebrate the first place in Canada that their German forebears settled after perilously crossing the Atlantic.

This year’s 49th Maryhill Heritage Day, on September 21, will be no different, said organizer Diane Strickler.
