You can learn a lot from a simple walk.

For Jane Jacobs, the celebrated American-Canadian author and activist, there was something cathartic about simply strolling around a city and cultivating a curiosity about what she encountered. It was a practice that led to the publication of her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, and inspired many to follow in her footsteps.

The annual walks that bear her name started in Toronto in 2007, the year after her death in the city she’d called home since 1971. They now take place in more than 200 cities in some three dozen countries.
