It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Allan Ryan, who departed this life on January 31st at Chicopee GRHN. Born May 21st 1945 in Montreal, Allan was a talented artist with an unflinching dedication to his next big project. Stubborn, forthright, and incredibly funny, he also loved and felt the world deeply.
Growing up the youngest and less-supervised son of an industrialist family (Temco Electric Ltd.), his childhood was ripe with mischievous adventure. This contributed to his tremendous storytelling skills. His children recall heated Monopoly games; the constant smell of sawdust that comes with perpetual renovation; family pets settled in his lap to receive their next peanut; and many opportunities to develop their creativity in his workshop. He delighted in conversations with young artists who visited his studio in Conestogo as he tinkered with jewelry- and glass-making in his final, lucid years.
Allan was exceedingly proud of his children, Phil (Mercedes), Andrew (Jenn), Katherine (David), and Kristin; but it was his grandchildren who brought out the very best in him: Iain, Max, Maeve, and Jack. He leaves behind his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Lynn, who cared tirelessly for him during a challenging health decline. A celebration of life is planned for the spring. The family is grateful for the support of the Alzheimer’s Society; CAMH; Waterloo Regional Police; and the incredible team at GRHN. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Waterloo.
