Canadians increasingly struggle with debt

With a prime spending time ahead, credit counsellor urges people to be mindful of spending, seek help if they need it

An experienced debt counsellor said he wasn’t surprised that there has been a steep increase in non-mortgage loans going unpaid.

Mark Kalinowski, of the Credit Counselling Society, which has a local branch in Waterloo, said the pressure on Canadians has been building for years.

“People right now are really, really tight,” Kalinowski said, adding: “The cost of living has gone up, and people’s salaries haven’t kept up.”
