With Waterloo Region facing a developing capacity issue in its major water service areas, some community members suggest exploring both old and new water management options, such as residential cisterns, to address future needs.

The region announced last week that the Mannheim Service Area – which supplies Kitchener, Waterloo, and parts of Cambridge, Woolwich, and Wilmot – is operating at or near its system capacity.

The issue, the region emphasized, is not related to drinking-water quality, but to quantity. Aging infrastructure, lower-than-normal water levels in the system, and rapid population growth have all contributed to reduced supply margins.
