Elmira’s Doug Martin, who described himself as a “rink rat” back when he was a kid, is now celebrating being a referee for half a century.
Martin lived about two blocks from the arena and would help out around the rink, which earned him $2 for sweeping after a Sugar Kings game, $1 for changing the pegs, or 50 cents without the pegs.
And by the time he was 14 years old, a men’s rec league had started playing after the Kings’ games.
