The Ontario government has introduced new legislation aimed at cutting red tape and accelerating the construction of housing and infrastructure across the province, a move critics say undermines municipal autonomy and weakens environmental and tenant protections.
The proposed Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025 was tabled this week by Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack. The bill builds on previous legislation – the Protect Ontario by Building Smarter and Faster Act, 2025 – and is designed, the province says, to “reduce gridlock, relieve backlog at the Landlord and Tenant Board, and prompted an increased supply of rental housing.”
“Our government is building a more prosperous, resilient and competitive economy by fighting costly delays and regulatory burdens that slow the delivery of homes, roads and infrastructure that communities need,” Flack said in a release. “With tariffs and economic uncertainty taking aim at our economy, we’re working with municipal leaders and homebuilders to get shovels in the ground faster so we can build more homes and keep workers on the job.”
