Filly Milwaukee Appeal, owned by Eugene George of Breslau, was edged out of the Prince of Wales Stakes in a photo finish at Fort Erie racetrack July 12.
Three-year-old Gallant, a 15-1 long shot going into the race, won by less than an inch (though recorded officially as a nose) to claim $300,000 of the $500,000 purse.
The Prince of Wales Stakes is the second race of Canada’s Triple Crown for Canadian-bred three-year-olds. Milwaukee Appeal finished third in the Queen’s Plate, the second race, on June 21 after handily winning the Woodbine Oaks June 7.
The third jewel of the Triple Crown is the Breeder’s Stakes which takes place Aug. 2 at Woodbine racetrack.
