Rain was dripping from the festive branches for much of the afternoon, but not even a drenching cloudburst could put a dampener on the season’s first Christmas-tree sales in downtown Elmira.

“We had a bit of a downpour earlier, but we still had people waiting for us as we opened up,” said Elmira Scout leader Phillippe Bertrand as decades-old tradition started again last Sunday at the newly lit-up Gore Park bandstand.

“As soon as we opened the gates, people wanted to get in and get the tall ones before they sell out.”
