This winter season hit hard in November, which made it the snowiest in the region in more than 70 years, but snowmobiling trails first opened in December.

There are 30,000 km of trails across Ontario, and 2,256 km of that falls in the Southwestern Ontario Snowmobile Region, which is maintained by organizations such as the Elmira Snowmobilers Club, among others, in and around Woolwich Township.

“It’s been off and on,” said Graham Synder, a snowmobiler and trail groomer, adding, “It’s been good this year when we get the snow.”
