When someone walks into the Wellesley Food Cupboard in search of relief, there’s a beautiful moment when their eyes alight with hope at the stacked shelves. That’s a moment volunteers live for, when they feel like they’re empowering someone who would otherwise be desperate and hungry.

“It’s often a very uplifting experience for them when they come in that door to collect their food basket twice a month, and see all the goods on the shelves,” volunteer Greg Delutis told The Observer.

“But lately that’s been replaced with a look of disappointment when they see the shelves bare and realize they don’t have what they need to feed their families.”
