Last week’s municipal election saw higher turnout and plenty of turnover in the mayors’ seats across Waterloo Region, including in Wellesley and Woolwich townships.

In Woolwich, where Sandy Shantz did not run for re-election, Ward 1 Coun. Evan Burgess was elected mayor, while Wellesley voters selected newcomer Chris Martin over three-term incumbent Joe Nowak.

Across the region, just one incumbent retained the mayoralty, Kitchener’s Berry Vrbanovic. Change was a theme of elections across much of the province, notes retired UW political science professor Peter Woolstencroft.
