Ontario’s police watchdog is now investigating last week’s Elmira standoff after a 50-year-old woman was charged with weapons offences and assaulting an officer.

The Special Investigations Unit, which probes possible criminal conduct by police officers and provides civilian oversight into the actions of force members, did not explain the reason for this.

Amid a growing mystery about what happened, the agency also declined to identify or disclose the gender of the person, who Observer staff witnessed being taken into custody after an almost four-hour standoff with heavily armed officers at a Timber Trail Road home on January 28.
