Canada continues to grapple with the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which published its report on the multi-generational impacts of residential schools just over a decade ago in 2015.
Now, there are a number of ways for local Indigenous and non-Indigenous allies to engage in the lead-up to the National Truth and Reconciliation Day on September 30.
According to the report, more 150,000 Indigenous children attended residential schools between roughly 1867 and 1996. More than 4,000 of those never returned home. Having gathered testimony from some 6,000 witnesses, the commission noted nearly 38,000 claims of physical or sexual abuse – leading to $2.7 billion in compensation to be awarded.
