Ontario has reached a historic milestone in food insecurity, with over one million residents relying on food banks last year, highlighting a critical social challenge that is reshaping demand across Waterloo Region’s community agencies.
This comes amid StatsCan’s November release of the Consumer Price Index, which showed grocery price inflation rose 4.7 per cent – the highest increase since December 2023.
According to Feed Ontario’s 2025 Hunger Report, 1,007,441 Ontarians accessed a food bank between April 2024 and March 2025. That’s nearly 10,000 more people than the previous year and an 87 per cent increase since 2019–20.
