U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed escalating tariffs on Canadian industries during his second term in office, and now the federal government is seeking to counteract the damage with just over $1 million in funding for two local initiatives.
The funding comes in lockstep with investments from both the city and Region of Waterloo, and aims to bolster the work being done by AeroWR and the Waterloo Health Innovation Economic Development initiative. The goal is to reduce reliance on U.S. trade and protect some 1,200 jobs that have been threatened by the president’s posturing.
“Today’s investment is part of our plan to double down on Waterloo Region’s world-class companies in manufacturing, defence, health care and more, so we can meet whatever challenges that come our way,” Premier Doug Ford said in an announcement during a stop in Waterloo August 13.
