The Waterloo Regional Police assured Wellesley council that the CCTV cameras to be installed in the community are not being used for Big Brother-style surveillance, but are merely used to complement existing investigation methods after crimes have been committed.
“The cameras are not constantly monitored by police personnel, and they are not used for routine surveillance. If we’re accessing these cameras, a crime has occurred, or we suspect it is occurring at that time,” explained WRPS’ Jarrett Brown in a presentation Tuesday night.
“Only authorized and trained personnel can access the footage, and all access is logged and auditable.”
The police are not using facial recognition technology.
