Everything old is new again, as the province, not the residents, will now choose Waterloo Region’s chair.
Just prior to the long weekend, the province announced plans to appoint the heads of eight fast-growing regions, including the Region of Waterloo, as a way to speed up development, its number-one priority.
Under the proposed Better Regional Governance Act, the new appointees would also have “strong chair” powers, similar to the strong mayors legislation already in place. That would mean bylaws could be passed with just a third of regional councillors onside, among other changes.
