Waterloo Region’s watersheds are among those listed as at risk in a new report by the Ontario Headwaters Institute.
The list, released last week by the charity promoting water security in the province, highlights the erosion of environmental protections as the province prioritizes facilitating development. That includes the likes of Bill 56 and Bill 60, which critics warn reduce protection for drinking water and watersheds.
Bill 56, the Building a More Competitive Economy Act, allows ministerial moves to rewrite and approve local drinking water rules faster, meaning local committees have less power to set their own water rules. Bill 60, the Water and Wastewater Public Corporations Act, lets the province move local water services into separate corporate bodies.
