What should a teacher do after retirement?
Not only have they lost their routine, their classroom, their students and their co-workers – quite often it feels like they’ve lost their purpose, too. It can be a difficult transition, but for retirees from Elmira District Secondary School there’s something to look forward to: membership in the Fleetfooters hiking group, which turns 25 this year.
The founding trio is Betty Dyck, Barb Carter and Susan Brooks, who all retired from the local high school in 2001.
“When the three of us retired, we decided to walk on Monday mornings. Sometimes we walk an hour out, an hour back. And then as more people retired, more ladies from EDSS joined us,” Dyck told The Observer.
