The Lions Club of Ariss & Maryhill held their 3rd fundraising project night. Ladies in the community were invited to take in the “Do It Yourself – Sign Painting Nite” on Tuesday, November 26th where they had the choice of several various Christmas theme wooden Welcome Signs. This was held at the Maryhill Heritage Park Community Centre at 6:30 p.m. These nights are very popular and places in the hall fill quickly. Leaders for the evening were Allie Piggott & Sam Johnston.
The Lions Club began in Chicago Illinois, USA in 1917. It became Lions Clubs International in 1920 when the first club formed outside the United States in Windsor, Ontario Canada. It has grown to be the largest service organization in the world serving in more than 250 counties and geographical areas. Approximately 1.5 million Lions, Lioness and Leos are serving those less fortunate in their communities and the world.
The Ariss and Maryhill area club was formed in November 2009 with the forming of the Ariss and District Branch Lions Club with 7 members. On April 8th, 2011 a full service Lions Club became a reality with the chartering of the Ariss and District Lions Club with 26 members. The name was changed to Ariss and Maryhill Lions Club when their meeting place changed to the Maryhill Heritage Park Community Centre in Maryhill in 2014.
In their short period of time they have pledged 15 thousand dollars for a score clock at the Royal Distributing Athletic Performance Centre in Marden, provided a ceiling lift for Sick Children’s Hospital in Toronto, a portable battery operated “Jaws of Life” for the Maryhill Fire Department, a 24 by 12 foot roll-out awning at the rear of the Community Centre, and assisted in the purchase of a specially designed tricycle for a local youth with autism. They have also sponsored and graduated a hearing ear dog guide and canine vision dog guide from the Lions Foundation of Canada dog guide program. Their third dog was a Diabetes alert dog guide which graduated in the early part of 2019. They have pledged to sponsor 6 dog guides for a total of 48 thousand dollars.
Their latest fundraisers “Nail It Nite” and “Sign Painting Nite” have proved to be very popular.
They are always looking to grow their membership and cordially invite all men and ladies age 18 and onward to come and join us, have fun and enjoy helping them nourish the lives of others. Check them on Facebook, google their website or speak to any Lions member.
