Dane Goebel got a phone call in the summer of 1980 asking him to join the Maryhill squad for the Fire Fighters Association of Ontario (FFAO) competitions.
“He said, ‘Dane, can you run? We’re looking for some speed,’” Goebel recalled of the appeal from his brother-in-law, Kevin Karley, who recruited him as a volunteer firefighter.
Forty-five years later, Goebel is hanging up his bunker gear.
